WARD COMMITTEE REPRESENTATIVE’S REPORT FRIDAY 2ND FEBRUARY 2012.
Compiled by Andrew Bromley-Gans
After the opening formalities the meeting was addressed by the Director of Protection Services Mr. Victor Chetty who had been on a fact finding visit to Cape Town and was suitably impressed by what he had seen there. He wants to implement a number of the innovations he saw there at the Hibiscus Municipality.
CRIME FIGHTING
The installation of surveillance cameras.
The purchase of 2 “Zee” bikes.
Stricter enforcement of municipal bylaws eg. drinking on beaches and public places.
It was felt by the meeting that Technology could not replace the man on the beat but they needed proper training.
TRAFFIC CONTROL
Increased use of road blocks in December especially in sensitive traffic areas. Investigating use of sensor technology in parking bays of Margate Port Shepstone. Stricter enforcement of National roads transport act such as Regulation 247 (passengers transported in open bakkies.)
24 HOUR DUTY OF FIRE PERSONNEL
The committee felt that the response time for personnel was unacceptable Director to respond
ROADS AND ROAD REPAIR
Gert Brits, previously in charge of road repair in the Hibiscus, has resigned but no new appointment as yet been made. The committee asked that council adopted a rolling roads maintenance plan should be placed before council to replace present crisis management approach.
TRAFALGAR CONSERVANCY
Councillor George Henderson reported that the re-zoning of rem 333 had taken place and that steward had been formally handed over to the Trafalgar Conservation Group.
WATER
Due to UGU’s on going financial crisis, all internally funded capital projects have been cancelled. Major breaks in old AC pipes are happening in most areas. This along with illegal connections spells concern for us all both for future supply and quality of water. It is suggested that Ratepayers Associations encourage house holders to erect rain water tanks. In this way make themselves self sufficient.
